I've had the honor of photographing over 100 weddings and countless adventure sessions in my 14 years as a pro. It's not just my career – it is my PASSION, and I'd love nothing more than to help guide you through the process.
Your wedding day is a celebration of love, and it’s also an opportunity to make eco-conscious choices that reflect your commitment to a sustainable future. From reducing waste to supporting local businesses, here are some eco-friendly ideas to help you plan a wedding that’s both beautiful and environmentally responsible.
1. Choose a Sustainable Venue:
Start your sustainable wedding journey by selecting an eco-friendly venue. Look for places that prioritize sustainability, such as farms, vineyards, or event spaces with green certifications. These venues often have energy-efficient facilities and waste reduction programs.
2. Support Local Vendors:
When planning your wedding, consider working with local vendors. Supporting nearby businesses not only reduces your carbon footprint but also boosts the local economy. Look for local florists, caterers, and photographers who share your commitment to sustainability.
3. Rent or Buy Secondhand Decor:
Embrace the charm of vintage and secondhand decor. You can find unique gently-used items at thrift/consignment stores, antique shops, and online marketplaces. Not only does this reduce the demand for new production, but it also adds a touch of character to your wedding decor.
4. Eco-Friendly Invitations:
Opt for digital invitations or choose eco-friendly paper options made from recycled materials. Encourage guests to RSVP online to minimize paper waste. If you prefer physical invitations, consider plantable ones with seeds that guests can grow into flowers.
5. Sustainable Dining:
Work with your caterer to create a sustainable menu featuring locally sourced, seasonal ingredients. Reduce food waste by planning portion sizes carefully and donating leftovers to a local food bank. Complement your meal with organic wines and locally brewed beers.
6. Composting and Waste Reduction:
Partner with a local composting company like Music Mountain Compost to manage food scraps and other organic waste from your wedding. Composting diverts waste from landfills and helps create nutrient-rich soil. Set up clearly-labeled recycling and composting stations for guests to use.
7. Alternative Ideas to Sparkler Exits:
Replace sparklers, which can be harmful to the environment and wildlife, with bubbles, streamer wands, or LED wands at the end of the night. Biodegradable bubbles are a fun and eco-friendly way to celebrate your exit as newlyweds, and LED or streamer wands can be used several times and/or re-sold.
8. Sustainable Favors:
Show appreciation to your guests with sustainable wedding favors. Consider giving potted plants, tree saplings, reusable bamboo utensils, or locally made artisanal goods. Avoid single-use plastics and items that may contribute to landfill waste. If you’d like to forego the favors altogether, you can always donate to a charity in lieu of them instead!
9. Eco-Friendly Attire:
Choose wedding attire made from sustainable materials or consider renting outfits for the big day. You can also opt for pre-owned wedding gowns or suits. After the wedding, donate or repurpose your attire to give it a second life.
10. Carbon Offsetting:
Calculate the carbon footprint of your wedding and consider offsetting it by making a donation to a reputable carbon offset program like Trees Water, & People. This helps counterbalance the emissions generated by travel, energy use, and more.
11. Educate and Inspire:
Share your sustainability journey with your guests. Use your wedding website or social media to inform them about your eco-friendly choices and encourage them to adopt similar practices in their own lives.
A sustainable wedding not only reduces your environmental impact but also sets a positive example for your loved ones. By making conscious choices, you can celebrate your special day with a clear conscience, knowing that you’ve taken steps to protect the planet you love.
Your wedding day is a beautiful beginning, and with these sustainable choices, it can also be a celebration of a greener, more sustainable future.
