I've had the honor of photographing over 100 weddings and countless adventure sessions in my 14 years as a pro. It's not just my career – it is my PASSION, and I'd love nothing more than to help guide you through the process.
Pets are more than just animals; they are cherished members of the family. It’s no wonder that many couples want to honor & incorporate their furry friends in their wedding celebrations, whether they are present to share the joy or there in spirit! Here are some tips on how to include your pet on your wedding day:
Tips For Pets Present at Your Wedding
Appoint a Pet Attendant:
If your pet is well-behaved and comfortable around people, consider having a designated pet attendant. This person–whether they are your regular petsitter, a designed family member/friend, or hired by a company like For the Love of Paws or Pawfect for You – can be responsible for bringing your pet to the venue, caring for them throughout the day, and ensuring they are included in photos and special moments.
Pet-Friendly Venue:
Choose a wedding venue that welcomes pets. Many outdoor locations, such as parks, gardens, and beaches, are pet-friendly and provide a beautiful backdrop for your ceremony or photos. Check with the venue in advance to understand their pet policies.
Pet-Safe Attire:
If you plan to dress up your pet, make sure their attire is safe, comfortable, and non-restrictive. Avoid anything that might cause discomfort or stress for your furry friend. A simple floral collar or a bowtie can be a charming addition.
Include Them in the Ceremony:
Find a meaningful role for your pet in the wedding ceremony. They can serve as a ring bearer, flower petal tosser, or simply join you at the altar. Ensure that their participation aligns with their physical ability as well as their temperament & comfort level.
Pet-Friendly Vows:
Incorporate your pet into your vows by making promises to care for them and love them as a part of your family. This heartfelt gesture not only honors your pet, but also showcases your commitment to one another.
Meet Up With Them After the Ceremony:
If their temperament doesn’t allow for them to be part of the ceremony, meet up with them during cocktail hour for a short walk and some photos. This is where it’s really helpful to have a designated handler: to assist in bringing them over and then returning them to a house nearby when you’re done.
For Pets There in Spirit
Memorial Table:
Create a beautiful memorial table or space at your wedding venue to honor pets who have passed away. Include framed photos, candles, and a heartfelt tribute to celebrate their presence in your lives.
Pet-Inspired Decor:
Infuse your wedding decor with pet-inspired elements. If you opted to just take photos with your pet at your proposal or engagement session, frame and display those! You can also incorporate paw prints, silhouettes, or pet-themed decor items that reflect your love for your four-legged friends. Some fun ways to incorporate them are on napkins, on your speciality cocktail list, or on cut-outs that you can use at the photo booth or on the reception dance floor!
Customized Wedding Favors:
Offer wedding favors that honor your pets. Consider custom pet-themed favors, such as paw print cookies or pet-themed coasters.
Include Their Name:
Include your pet’s name in your wedding program, ceremony readings, or even in your vows. This simple gesture ensures they are remembered and cherished on your special day.
Donation in Their Honor:
In lieu of wedding favors, consider requesting that guests make a donation to an animal charity or rescue organization in honor of your pets. This act of kindness celebrates your love for animals and supports a meaningful cause.
Capture the Moments
Above all else, whether your pet is present or there in spirit, be sure to capture these precious moments. Work with a pet-loving photographer like Thru Love’s Lens to learn how to include your pet on your wedding day & encapsulate your connection with them. Remember, the love we share with our pets is unconditional, and their presence, whether physical or in spirit, can bring an extra layer of warmth to your wedding day. These photos will serve as lasting reminders of the love and joy they bring to your lives.
